COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Salvation Army red kettle campaign exceeded its $90,000 goal by raising $110,000 from local donors during the 2025 drive from November through Christmas Eve. Major Alfonso Martinez said the extra funds will boost emergency shelter, food distribution + youth programs year-round.  San Angelo LIVE!

CRIME NEWS

  • Federal prosecutors have charged 20 men for a point-shaving scheme that involved 17 Division I programs, including Abilene Christian, allegedly fixing nearly 30 games for gambling purposes.  San Angelo LIVE!

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Mini Miss Wool Pageant returns later this month to honor San Angelo's wool heritage and young talent. Contestants ages 6 to 14 will compete on January 24 at 5 p.m. at Brooks and Bates Theatre for sashes, trophies + custom mohair jackets.  KWFR

ECONOMY NEWS

  • City officials and local partners are highlighting historic attractions and planned events to boost tourism and economic growth. The initiative — building on recent travel gains — aims to support local businesses and increase overnight stays.  KWFR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The San Angelo ISD Board will meet Tuesday, Jan. 20 at 5:45 p.m. in the Administration Building board room (1621 University Avenue) to vote on potential elementary school closures and handle routine business; community members may speak during the public comment period.  San Angelo LIVE!
  • Fort Concho is launching a lecture series tied to America’s 250th anniversary; the first talk is set for Thursday, Jan. 29 at 6 p.m. in the Commissary Building as Angelo State history professor Dr. Kenna Archer discusses the American Revolution plus free refreshments are provided for attendees.  KWFR
  • Dr. Bruce Bechtol Jr. (an ASU security studies professor) was named a Distinguished Fellow at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, a top institution that recognized his international expertise in North Korean and Middle East security studies. The appointment highlights his role in directing ASU’s online master’s program.  KWFR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Jan. 15, the San Angelo City Council approved rezoning by a 6+1 vote, clearing the way for a large data center project on city owned land northeast of town; upcoming negotiations over development terms will address concerns over water use, noise and infrastructure impacts.  KWFR

HEALTH NEWS

  • The San Angelo/Tom Green County Health Department released restaurant inspection scores for Jan. 4-10 on Jan. 15; several local restaurants earned perfect scores, while others received high to moderate ratings (in line with state food safety rules).  San Angelo Standard-Times

SPORTS NEWS

  • Angelo State indoor track teams open their 2026 season today as they travel to Lubbock for the Corky Classic at Texas Tech's Sports Performance Center. The two-day event starts today at 3 p.m. with the weight throw and continues Saturday with shot put, triple jump, and track events.  San Angelo LIVE!
  • The Angelo State Rams lost 65-53 to UT Dallas Thursday night after a strong first-half lead cooled in the second half; Coach Vinay Patel said injuries create a chance for other players to step up. The team will play Texas A&M-Kingsville next Wednesday.  San Angelo LIVE!
  • The Angelo State Belles beat UT Dallas 63-49 in their first matchup at Stephens Arena at the Junell Center on Thursday night. Taylor Grona led with 16 points and the team forced 16 turnovers — they will face Texas A and M Kingsville on Wednesday, Jan. 21 at 5:30 p.m.  San Angelo LIVE!
  • Local volleyball players from Wall, Water Valley and Veribest schools have been named to the Texas High School Coaches Association Super Elite Team — only 12 players per classification received the honor, with Wall’s Peyton Dickson and Lexi Kemp credited for a state semifinal run.  San Angelo LIVE!
  • Today, the No. 7 Irion County Lady Hornets will take on district co-leader Garden City at 6:30 p.m. in Mertzon — the team overcame a loss of four starters and holds an 18 win, 3 loss record.  San Angelo LIVE!
