COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Memorial services for former Precinct 2 Commissioner Sammy Farmer, who passed away Jan. 20, will be held at Immanuel Baptist Church; visitation takes place Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. + a memorial service is scheduled for Wednesday at 10 a.m.  KWFR
  • The Salvation Army of San Angelo opened a daytime warming station on Thursday, Jan. 22 to offer a warm place for residents without safe heat as dangerously cold weather sweeps the Concho Valley. Staff and volunteers are on site to assist those in need.  KWFR

CULTURE NEWS

  • Angelo State University's Mayer Museum completed a $7.9M expansion that added a new event hall and a gallery for exhibits at 2501 W. Ave. N — the event hall will soon be available for rental while the gallery immediately enhances museum programs.  San Angelo LIVE!

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Jan. 22, 2026, the EPA eased rules on methane and particulate pollution in Texas by extending the state deadline for emission plans by 18-months. State officials said they are developing measures to update air quality standards for communities.  San Angelo Standard-Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • San Angelo ISD board approved a $289,700 contract to abate asbestos and demolish the vacant Rio Vista Elementary campus, with work set to begin by Feb. 17. One trustee opposed the plan and urged keeping a building for the Boys + Girls Club.  San Angelo LIVE!

SPORTS NEWS

  • Angelo State head football coach Jeff Girsch announced on Wednesday that Jason Johnson will serve as the new offensive coordinator; the longtime coach (entering his 10th season with the Rams) was introduced at a press conference at the Junell Center on Thursday and will now oversee the quarterbacks.  San Angelo LIVE!
  • The Christoval Cougars lost a close district game to Forsan on Thursday night when the Buffaloes scored with less than five seconds to secure a 56 to 55 win at Christoval High School. They will next face Ozona in a district matchup on Tuesday, Jan. 27 at 7:30 p.m.  San Angelo LIVE!
  • Former San Angelo Central quarterback Maverick McIvor will play at the American Bowl tonight at 7 p.m. on NFL Network, where he will try to impress pro scouts before the NFL Draft in April.  San Angelo LIVE!
  • San Angelo Central senior Jaekob Jackson committed to play football at West Texas A&M University in Canyon after a standout season and a strong performance in the Blue-Grey All-American Bowl—he has yet to sign his letter of intent as National Signing Day is set for Feb. 4.  San Angelo LIVE!
  • Angelo State University’s baseball team, ranked No. 11 in Division II, will begin the season on the road Jan. 30 against UT Permian Basin, then open a home series against UT Tyler at 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6.  San Angelo LIVE!
