COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Today, the 93rd annual San Angelo Rodeo begins at Foster Communications Coliseum at 50 E. 43rd St and will run through April 20—with top rodeo rounds and the Western Finance Carnival at the fairgrounds offering classic rides and food. A parade on April 5 in downtown San Angelo and live music events at the Buffalo Social Club add extra fun to the festivities. San Angelo LIVE!
- ➤ Shannon Health will host its 13th annual Kids’ Marathon Celebration Event at San Angelo Stadium from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on April 24. Students in kindergarten through sixth grade will run a final celebration lap (part of a program that began in January) and take part in fitness activities while local groups add to the event (the first 350 participants receive a race tag, medal and T-shirt). CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Today, the Angelo State University Opera Theater program presents its annual spring performance of Mozart's final opera 'The Magic Flute' at 7:00 p.m. in the Carr Education-Fine Arts Building at 2602 Dena Drive (free for everyone), and a second show is scheduled for Saturday. San Angelo LIVE!
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Apartment rents in Tom Green County dropped in February from last month's average, with the typical listing falling to $1,042 (down from $1,052) per month according to Apartment List data. One-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments saw small decreases and remain much lower than rents statewide and nationwide. San Angelo Standard-Times
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department designated Lake Nasworthy as infested with zebra mussels after detecting larvae at two sites and a single adult mussel from mid-March samples—boaters are urged to clean, drain and dry boats to help stop the spread. San Angelo LIVE!
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Texas Department of Public Safety said that after May 7 only licenses with a gold star will work for airport security and federal buildings. Residents who need a new or updated license must visit a DPS office with required documents (birth certificate, Social Security card, vehicle registration or title, and current car insurance). - ➤ Dudra Butler, a retired school social worker from San Angelo, is running for the Single Member District 2 seat on the City Council in the May 3 election. Butler spent 26 years working with at-risk students and families and said her experience will help grow affordable housing and attract new businesses—she also pledged to support police and fill the vacant COSADC director role. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The San Angelo Health Foundation celebrates 30 years of service in the Concho Valley and will host a public event from 4-6 p.m. on May 14 (at the Sugg Community Room in the Stephens Central Library) to honor its contributions. The foundation awarded over $500,000 in first-quarter grants to four nonprofits, including the Family Resource Network in Mason, Frontera Healthcare Network, Quail Valley Volunteer Fire Department, and Texas Ramp Project. - ➤ The #1 Angelo State baseball team moved its weekend series against #24 St. Edward's to Saturday due to Friday storms. The doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. Saturday—followed by a single game Sunday at 3 p.m. and a finale Monday at 1 p.m.—and all games will be broadcast on kksa-am.com and 1260AM. KWFR
