ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices fell for the second week in a row, with San Angelo drivers paying $3.65 a gallon for regular unleaded—a 29-cent drop from last week though still 89 cents higher than a year ago. AAA Texas said global oil market issues may lead to further changes in the coming weeks.  San Angelo LIVE!
  • Texans will save money on emergency supplies with no tax during a sales tax holiday from Saturday, April 25 to Monday, April 27—items like batteries, flashlights and portable generators qualify if they meet set price limits.  San Angelo Standard-Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Angelo State University's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry was awarded a $75,000 grant from the Welch Foundation to buy new lab equipment (a fluorescence spectrometer, an ultra-low freezer, and a 32-core computer) that will boost student research and hands-on learning.  San Angelo LIVE!

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Abbott announced that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission will provide $60 million in federal funding to rural hospital districts to expand community-based health programs; the move is expected to better serve local communities.  San Angelo LIVE!

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Zumper data showed San Angelo apartment rents dropped 6% from March’s median of $1,360 to $1,276, with one-bedroom units falling from $921 to $909 and two-bedroom prices holding near flat. Local rents remain well below state and national medians, at 22% and 32% lower on average + respectively.  San Angelo Standard-Times

SPORTS NEWS

  • The No. 13-ranked Angelo State softball team will host doubleheaders on Friday at 5:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Mayer Field for their final regular season home games against Lubbock Christian and Midwestern State, and free t-shirts & Family Meal Deal are offered on Friday.  San Angelo LIVE!
  • The No. 9 Wall Hawks won a 2 — 1 game over the Jim Ned Indians on Wednesday, April 22 in Tuscola, sweeping the series to claim their district championship and earn the top seed for the Class 3A Division II playoffs.  San Angelo LIVE!
  • Angelo State hosts Cameron at Foster Field today at 6:30 p.m. in a four-game series to wrap up the regular season — featuring Saturday doubleheaders and a Sunday finale with a Senior Day ceremony.  San Angelo LIVE!
  • Don Coffell is returning as head football coach for Irion County ISD after coaching the girls basketball team to two strong seasons (57-13 record). The Hornets, who missed the playoffs the last two seasons, will face a tough district next school year.  San Angelo LIVE!
  • Angelo State’s tennis team will close its historic season today with a match against Lubbock Christian at noon in Lubbock, and will travel to Odessa on Saturday to face UT Permian Basin, with two wins potentially setting a new season record.  San Angelo LIVE!
