BUSINESS NEWS

  • MMI Hotel Group has taken over operations at the AmericInn by Wyndham at 2580 Southwest Blvd in San Angelo—part of a Texas expansion that includes managing 84 rooms, a complimentary breakfast, a fitness center, a business center, a Lobby Market, and an outdoor pool with a fire pit.  San Angelo LIVE!

CRIME NEWS

  • A San Angelo man, 19-year-old Daniel Betell, was indicted on counts of aggravated robbery, aggravated kidnapping and burglary after he robbed, kidnapped and assaulted a couple over a cat at Raintree Apartments on Dec. 21 — he was arrested on Jan. 29 and now faces a $280,000 bond.  San Angelo LIVE!

CULTURE NEWS

  • Angelo State University’s symphonic band will hold its final spring concert on April 28 at 7 p.m. in Murphey Performance Hall in downtown San Angelo—free to everyone and featuring more than 70 student musicians with each piece led by a different student conductor.  San Angelo LIVE!

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Texas Education Agency released accountability ratings that showed San Angelo ISD earned a D for the 2022 to 2023 school year with a score of 68 out of 100—seven schools failed while two earned an A, and 61.6% of the 13,529 students were economically disadvantaged. The 2023 to 2024 ratings have been delayed and will be released in May.  San Angelo Standard-Times
  • SAISD officials on Monday detailed plans to offer summer academic programs for pre-K through high school with targeted reading and math sessions, Jump Start programs, and YMCA childcare support in July. They will evaluate and close aging Head Start sites—moving staff to the former Oaks campus in early May if the facilities are too costly to maintain.  San Angelo LIVE!

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Texas Parks and Wildlife Department officials stocked about 660 channel catfish into the Concho River near downtown San Angelo on Friday as part of the Neighborhood Fishin’ Program—restocking will occur every two weeks through the end of October.  San Angelo LIVE!

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Jamal Schumpert—an Angelo State University graduate who moved to San Angelo in 2010—is running for the District 4 seat on City Council. If elected, he will hold budget workshops, monitor city spending, and back economic growth along interstate 27 as well as improve local education, with Election Day on May 3.  San Angelo LIVE!
