COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Juneteenth celebrations started Wednesday evening in Abilene at Stevenson Park with events such as a kickball game, free fish fry, live music, and games, while in San Angelo the Blackshear Heights Family will begin water games and catering at Martin Luther King Jr. Park later today—further festivities will include a Friday block party and a Saturday parade with a step team performance, basketball tournament, and community meal.  FOX West Texas

CRIME NEWS

  • Deputies responded at about 5:30 p.m. yesterday to a residence on Lakota Lane in Buffalo Heights where a standoff and exchange of gunfire occurred and a man was taken into custody with a gunshot wound — law enforcement issued a shelter-in-place order until the scene was secured with no deputies injured.  San Angelo LIVE!
  • A Carlsbad man — Jayden Zane Sanchez-Ayala, 19 — was indicted on two counts of manslaughter and two counts of evading arrest causing death after he fled police, crashed his vehicle on US 87 near Wall, and killed his two passengers, Jesus Manuel Silva, 18, and Matthew Allen Reyes, 20.  San Angelo LIVE!

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Angelo State University signed five education agreements that renew four existing programs and add a new transfer agreement with Goodfellow Air Force Base—boosting ties with Howard College and the San Angelo Independent School District.  San Angelo LIVE!
  • The San Angelo Independent School District delivered more than 160 books—along with activity bags, snacks, and balloons—to 24 students and their 41 siblings on June 4 as part of its annual San Angelo READS! Summer Book Patrol, encouraging a love for reading during the summer break.  San Angelo LIVE!

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials approved a $2,015,302 purchase of water meters from Core & Main, Inc. on Tuesday during the City Council meeting to meet federal EPA rules — the phased project to replace aging meters will finish by late spring or early summer and is funded solely by the Water Capital fund.  San Angelo LIVE!
