COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A local nonprofit is hosting a community fundraiser Saturday, June 28 at the Carl Ray Johnson Recreation Center in San Angelo from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will preview plans for a large mural on the Loop 306 wall at Martin Luther King Drive and 7th Street and will use donations to support projects that beautify the MLK Corridor.  San Angelo LIVE!

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Chuy’s Mexican Restaurant is finishing construction on a new location at the Mall of Abilene adjacent to Hendrick’s Service Center with an expected opening by the end of summer. The new branch offers San Angelo residents a closer option to enjoy Tex-Mex fare — a welcome alternative to the current location in Midland — as the chain expands.  San Angelo LIVE!

CRIME NEWS

  • Corrections officers at Tom Green County Jail reported 17 bookings in the past 24 hours — including arrests for failure to register as a sex offender, making a terroristic threat, and felony driving while intoxicated — and noted that the facility now holds 430 individuals.  San Angelo LIVE!
  • San Angelo LIVE! said a fake article made to look like it came from their website is circulating in local chat groups and private messages, and they are taking legal steps against those who created the falsified report after it used photoshopped images drawn from a shooting in Buffalo Heights on June 18th.  San Angelo LIVE!
  • Larry Don Ballard, 72, was charged with aggravated assault against a public servant after he allegedly fired on deputies during a domestic disturbance at a home on Lakota Lane on Wednesday around 5:30 p.m.—he remains under Tom Green County Sheriff's supervision while receiving treatment and the Texas Rangers are investigating the case.  San Angelo LIVE!

CULTURE NEWS

  • Angelo State University is hosting a free art show by the Water Valley Artist Society until July 18 — the exhibit is held in the Carr Education-Fine Arts Building at 2602 Dena Drive and shows drawings, paintings, prints and sculptures by junior high and high school students from the Water Valley Independent School District, open on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  San Angelo LIVE!

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Angelo State student-athletes Jacob Guerrero and Katelin Heise were named Lone Star Conference Scholar-Athletes for the 2024-25 school year, the conference said Tuesday—Guerrero, an accounting major who played for the Rams, and Heise, a graduate student who captained the Rambelles, earned the honor for their strong play and academics. The awards recognize their leadership and dedication on and off the field.  San Angelo LIVE!

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Texas Department of Public Safety expanded its Aircraft Operations Division to San Angelo—bringing a helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft to support law enforcement, search and rescue, and border security across a region from Del Rio to Lubbock. The move is expected to bolster cooperation among local, county, state and federal agencies during emergencies.  San Angelo LIVE!
