  • San Angelo's Institute of Cognitive Development, a family shelter, will use an $18,242 grant from the Texas Council on Family Violence this summer to improve its outdoor play area and equipment for children facing abuse and neglect — one of 13 domestic violence agencies in Texas receiving grant support.  San Angelo Standard-Times

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A car lost control on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. near US Highway 277 and Old Ballinger Highway due to slick roads, striking a train crossing signal and causing the driver, who was alone in the vehicle, to be taken to Shannon Medical Center while traffic slowed in the area.  San Angelo LIVE!

CRIME NEWS

  • Three people were arrested on July 2 and booked into Tom Green County Jail for allegedly stealing HVAC equipment from the Grape Creek Volunteer Fire Department on June 28 — authorities explained the arrest followed organized criminal activity and community assistance from the Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office.  San Angelo LIVE!

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Wall High School finished as the runner-up in the UIL Lone Star Cup standings in Class 3A this week with 69 points from state titles in baseball and boys golf — a strong showing for Concho Valley — while other local schools ranked in the top 25 in various UIL classes.  San Angelo LIVE!

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On July 3, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department stocked the Concho River in downtown San Angelo with channel catfish—released between Oakes and Irving streets—as part of its Neighborhood Fishin’ program that will deliver biweekly shipments to urban waters. Local anglers can keep up to five fish per day if they have the proper fishing license.  San Angelo LIVE!

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • San Angelo officials urged residents to use caution with fireworks and follow local rules during today’s Fourth of July celebrations. They said fireworks are illegal inside city limits and within 5,000 feet outside—violators will face seizure and disposal charges.  San Angelo LIVE!
  • Gov. Greg Abbott announced more than $7.3 million in new Texas Talent Connection grants for workforce training programs statewide on Tuesday. In the Concho Valley, Skillpoint Alliance received $255,000 to train veterans and their spouses for jobs in advanced trades—part of a statewide effort to boost job skills.  San Angelo LIVE!

HEALTH NEWS

  • A San Angelo family lost their 5-year-old daughter Ariahella to juvenile Huntington’s disease after already mourning the death of their first daughter two years ago. Funeral services were held Monday and Tuesday as planned—while a GoFundMe campaign helped cover final expenses—offering a way for the community to support the family.  San Angelo Standard-Times
