CRIME NEWS

  • A 54-year-old San Angelo man was sentenced to 260 years after Judge Dusek revoked his probation for child pornography and drug-related offenses—he remains in Tom Green County Jail pending transfer to prison.  San Angelo Standard-Times
  • An alleged domestic abuse incident led to a SWAT standoff in San Angelo on Thursday as officers prepared to serve a warrant on a 34-year-old suspect barricaded in a home on the 300 block of East 8th Street—police advised the public to avoid the area near 7th and Main.  San Angelo LIVE!
  • San Angelo police arrested suspect Joshua Showels after a standoff on Thursday afternoon when he barricaded himself in a home on East 8th Street in connection with a domestic abuse call from Wednesday night—officers safely used chemical agents to secure him.  San Angelo LIVE!

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Christoval ISD trustees voted unanimously on Wednesday to approve a voluntary prayer and religious reading period under the new state law that lets students and staff read religious texts after signing a consent form. The policy takes effect Sept. 1—making Christoval one of the first districts in Texas to use the measure.  San Angelo LIVE!

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Texas Department of Public Safety launched its Operation Crash Awareness Reduction Effort—running until Sept. 1—targeting speeding, intoxicated driving, and other safety law violations to reduce crashes and save lives on Texas roads. The campaign is part of its 90 Days of Safety initiative—marking its 90th Anniversary—and urges drivers to follow key road safety tips.  San Angelo LIVE!
  • San Angelo officials proposed a plan to raise property taxes by about $150 for an average home—residents can share their input at a public hearing Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. at the McNeese Convention Center.  San Angelo Standard-Times
