EDUCATION NEWS

  • San Angelo ISD trustees will vote on a $316K plan on Sept. 18 to demolish the vacant Sam Houston Elementary campus after programs moved earlier this year. Administrators recommended Reese Albert Trucking for demolition and AML Environmental for asbestos abatement—aiming to reduce rising maintenance costs and neighborhood safety risks.  San Angelo LIVE!
  • Walter Juliff, a former Dallas Cowboys scout — who retired after a 50-year career — has joined the Angelo State University Foundation board to help guide financial support for students and programs.  San Angelo LIVE!

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Abbott signed on Sept. 5 three camp safety bills that require youth camps to update emergency plans, train staff, and notify parents about flood risks after the July Fourth floods. The laws ban licensing for camps in high-risk flood areas and include a grant program for early-warning sirens—steps meant to keep Texas children safer at camp.  San Angelo Standard-Times
  • Congressman August Pfluger testified at a Washington hearing on backup communications for rural areas—he noted that past floods and Hurricane Helene showed how low Earth orbit technology can restore critical emergency links when local systems fail. Experts described the need to coordinate new deployable systems with carriers to keep PSAPs connected during disasters.  San Angelo LIVE!

  • Angelo State volleyball lost its match last night at Colorado Christian University in Lakewood in straight sets, ending a 17 game winning streak and recording its first regular-season loss, and the team now stands at a 4 to 1 record and will play at the Colorado Premier Challenge—outside hitter Madi Parrish was named Division II National Player of the Week for her strong play last weekend.  KWFR
  • The Central Bobcats will host Abilene Cooper at 7 p.m. on Friday in their 52nd meeting, with the Bobcats holding a series lead of 28—22 with one tie and a win last season. The Lake View Chiefs will seek a 3—0 start at 7 p.m. on Friday against Lamesa as they come off five wins in six games and hold a series lead of 26—19.  KWFR
  • The eighth-ranked Angelo Rams travel to Eastern New Mexico on Saturday to begin their Lone Star Conference play as they try to extend a 12—game win streak while their opponent remains winless this season. With a 24—2 record since 2022 and a 26—20 win in their last match against Eastern, Kaeden Smith will start at quarterback as Braeden Fuller is sidelined.  KWFR
  • After a tough 41—21 loss to Amarillo High, San Angelo Central will host Abilene Cooper on Friday at San Angelo Stadium and aims for its first win this season. Quarterback Micah Smith improved his play and the return of injured running back Zey Johnson is expected to boost the offense—defensive stops will be key to holding Cooper's rushing game.  San Angelo LIVE!
  • Wall High School junior Mckenzie Lopez broke a 17-year-old school record on Wednesday in Hawley when she finished the two-mile course in 11 minutes, 41 seconds — beating the 2008 record set by Colleen Adams. Her third-place finish helped the team secure its fourth straight title — a milestone that highlights her strong performance.  San Angelo LIVE!
