COMMUNITY NEWS

  • First Financial Bank and three other local banks will volunteer on Monday as part of their 10th annual Day of Service to repair about 10 homes, assist at the United Way warehouse, and support flood victims in San Angelo. The program—expanded statewide by the Texas Bankers Association—reflects local banks' commitment to aiding those still recovering from the July 4 flood.  San Angelo LIVE!
  • Members and community volunteers have started cleaning up San Angelo Apostolic Church after a devastating fire—official plans for restoration have not been announced.  FOX West Texas

CULTURE NEWS

  • Fort Concho will host a public celebration on Oct. 16 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at its historic site—guests can park at 630 South Oakes Street with shuttle service, and if the weather is poor the ceremony will move indoors in reconstructed Barracks 4. The new barracks and mess halls will house the Fort Concho Library and Archives and were built with donations and grants from local foundations.  San Angelo LIVE!

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in San Angelo dropped to an average of $2.61 per gallon, down 25 cents from last week and 35 cents lower than this time last year, according to AAA Texas data—fuel demand is at a four-month low. Experts expect prices to fall further as drivers switch to winter-grade fuel and retailers increase inventory.  San Angelo LIVE!

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Angelo State University will host a week of homecoming events including a Ram Remembrance ceremony on Tuesday, a homecoming awards dinner, pep rally and bonfire on Friday, and a class reunion breakfast plus a parade on Saturday. The football game against Midwestern State on Saturday at LeGrand Stadium will crown the homecoming king and queen at halftime—capping off the celebration.  San Angelo Standard-Times

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Thursday, the Grape Creek Eagles lost their district opener—33—27—to the Coahoma Bulldogs in a fast-paced football game. Darrell West helped the Eagles score early, but key turnovers and a late incomplete pass let the Bulldogs win.  San Angelo LIVE!
  • On Friday, the Bangs Dragons ended their eight game district losing streak with a 48—0 shutout win over Ballinger at Bearcat Stadium. Running back Cason Tidwell led with four touchdowns and 189 yards on 15 carries as the team improved its playoff hopes and will play Hico next week.  San Angelo LIVE!
  • The Angelo State football team lost 28-14 to UT Permian Basin, ending a 14-game win streak and dropping them to No. 12 — they will face Texas A&M-Kingsville today at 7 p.m. as the team hopes a UTPB loss to Central Washington will reopen its chance to repeat as conference champs — keeping their postseason hopes alive.  San Angelo LIVE!
  • On Friday night, the Central Bobcats lost 58-42 to Midland Legacy as late penalties and third-down stops hurt their homecoming game—Midland Legacy's defense took over in the second half. Coach Mark Smith said the team struggled to keep the offense effective.  San Angelo LIVE!
