COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Meals for the Elderly, a San Angelo nonprofit, is raising funds to provide Thanksgiving dinners for disabled and older residents. Donations for turkey meals with all the trimmings can be given online, by mail, or in person before Nov. 20.  San Angelo Standard-Times

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Fire crews battled a major blaze for over three hours at the downtown San Angelo building near North Oakes and East 3rd Street Wednesday morning — the smoldering structure that caught fire Tuesday was demolished.  San Angelo LIVE!

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, Fort Concho reopened four old buildings—including two barracks and two mess halls turned into library archives and a special western history collection—as about 75 guests attended an event with Mayor Tom Thompson and city officials. The project took decades to complete and will serve as a new hub for preserving local history.  San Angelo Standard-Times
  • Angelo State University’s Symphony Orchestra will perform a free Halloween concert on October 25 at 7 p.m. in the Elta Joyce Murphey Auditorium at ASU — the concert will feature spooky classics, movie themes and trick-or-treating after the show — inviting families to join a festive evening.  San Angelo LIVE!

EDUCATION NEWS

  • San Angelo ISD Board of Trustees voted 6-0 Tuesday night to ask the state to sanction former Lincoln Middle School teacher Melissa Watson—who left mid-semester without proper notice. Watson resigned on Sept. 26 citing mental health reasons and took a new job, leaving the district to deal with the abrupt change.  San Angelo LIVE!
  • San Angelo military families affected by the ongoing government shutdown were urged by Texas Leadership Public Schools to apply for free or reduced-price meal programs and use available support resources—such as counseling via Military OneSource and aid from local food banks. The letter also detailed how eligible civilian families can access these services.  FOX West Texas

HEALTH NEWS

  • Scottish Rite for Children raised over $1.65 million at its 26th annual clay shoot on Oct.11 — the funds will support pediatric orthopedic care and research. More than 500 participants and nearly $20,000 in donations from Invenergy representatives helped make the event a success.  San Angelo LIVE!

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Angelo State Rambelles won 1-0 over Eastern New Mexico at Greyhound Stadium Wednesday night, extending their unbeaten streak against the Greyhounds to 10 years while improving their record to 7-3-4 overall. They will host UT Permian Basin on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the LeGrand Soccer Complex — a key matchup in Lone Star Conference play.  San Angelo LIVE!
  • The Lake View Chiefs will travel at 7 p.m. today to play the Pecos Eagles as they try to win their first district title in 21 years—building on a strong start with four straight wins. The team will focus on stopping Pecos’ ground game to secure a winning record this season.  San Angelo LIVE!
