COMMUNITY NEWS

  • San Angelo Support for Veterans will host wounded and disabled veterans on an all-expenses paid deer hunting trip starting at 6 p.m. today at San Angelo Regional Airport — Mathis Field. An Appreciation Dinner will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Vista Cielo Rosa in Christoval.  San Angelo LIVE!
  • Downtown San Angelo is hosting a Christmas Decorating Contest as local businesses dress their storefronts with festive holiday themes. Residents vote by liking displays on Facebook from December 1 until December 6— the winning business will receive a Christmas Card Package, a plaque, and community recognition at the Tree Lighting Ceremony at 1 p.m. on December 6.  San Angelo LIVE!

CULTURE NEWS

  • The San Angelo City Council approved $77,800 on Dec. 2 to support local nonprofit arts programs under the new HOT Funds Program. The awards went to core support for San Angelo Broadway Academy, San Angelo Symphony, Ballet San Angelo, and Angelo Civic Theatre + project support for the Hispanic Heritage Museum and Downtown San Angelo’s Mini Miss Wool Pageant.  San Angelo Standard-Times
  • San Angelo’s Old Central Firehouse gained statewide attention after Texas Monthly featured its transformation into a bed-and-breakfast, pizzeria and taproom—community members donated relics to highlight its past. The landmark was restored by Jody and Michele Babiash and now serves as a reminder of the city’s history.  San Angelo LIVE!

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • U.S. Rep. August Pfluger will introduce the ANCHOR Act tomorrow to let states expand Medicaid coverage for uninsured people with serious mental illness or substance use disorders—this bill will let states enroll eligible individuals for one-year periods and is backed by key health groups.  San Angelo LIVE!
  • San Angelo City Council approved a plan Tuesday to design new pod-style kennels that will replace the aging large-dog building at the animal shelter. Staff will now begin detailed design work and update cost estimates (with about $2 million already allocated to build three pods and possibly a fourth if costs allow), marking the most significant facility change in years.  San Angelo LIVE!

SPORTS NEWS

  • The undefeated Water Valley Wildcats will face the Rankin Red Devils in the Class 1A state semifinals at 5 p.m. Saturday at San Angelo Stadium—this rematch follows their 68-20 victory over Rankin on Oct. 3 and the winner will advance to the state final on Dec. 17.  San Angelo LIVE!
  • San Angelo’s top ropers (Dylan Hancock, Ty Harris and Joel Harris) have qualified for the National Finals Rodeo after finishing in the top 15 this season and will compete from Dec.4-13 in Las Vegas as they chase defending champion Riley Webb.  San Angelo LIVE!
